You created some magical moments for the residents

Katy delivers dementia-friendly singing sessions in care homes, dementia cafes, and day centres across Derbyshire, Cheshire, and Greater Manchester. Music is proven to have a deep impact on those living with dementia, and Katy is privileged to see this happen and play a small part in the magical moments which music creates.

Where it all began...

For two years, Katy worked 11 hour shifts every Saturday in a local care home in Buxton to suppliment her studies at the RNCM. It was during this time that her rapport with the elderly began. Deciding to combine her musical studies with her part-time job was the start of a new vocation for Katy, as she saw first hand the cathartic effects that her singing had on those isolated in care homes or living with dementia. Katy understands the importance of empathy and sensitivity when connecting with people who live with dementia and their families or carers.

Katy's singing sessions...

Each session has a different theme, for example "Dancing Hall Days", "A Trip to the Seaside", "Old Show Tunes", "Spring Songs", and "Adventures in Italy", to name a few. Within these sessions, Katy sings a range of styles from singers such as Doris Day, Vera Lynn, Frank Sinatra, Buddy Holly, Perry Como, and Dean Martin. As well as singing and engaging with the participants through singalongs, Katy tells everyone facts related to the theme and shows large picture cards to jog memories. It is always a magical moment when someone's face lights up after seeing a picture and hearing a song which prompts a memory.

Katy is a fully insured member of the Musicians Union.
